Elaine grows a passion for plants
A month into her new role of Account Manager at GP Plantscape – I caught up with Elaine Strang to find out how she was settling in. Elaine’s first few weeks have been a jam packed induction programme: literally getting her hands dirty servicing plants with our interior technicians, planting containers in the nursery, installing units. Not to mention a 2 day trip to Holland only the day after she joined GP.
Elaine said: ‘I never would have said I was really into interior plants, but after visiting Holland and just experiencing the sheer scale of the operation I was totally blown away – it was amazing. The people were so friendly and what came across was the passion they have for what they do. They just love it.’
‘It was great to be able to understand the supply chain and how plants are bought at ‘the Clock’ – but to experience their passion was fantastic,’ she continued. ‘Now I just want to go out and talk to people and I want my customers to feel the way I felt when I was in the nursery in Holland.’
Ms Strang may be new to the horticultural industry, but she is no stranger to business to business account management having had previous roles with: Powergen, Fuelcard Services and Health Care Waste. Her experience includes sales and sales management, coaching and training, recruitment and account management.
Talking about why she enjoys working in sales and account management Elaine said: ‘For me I like to see the whole process from start to finish – so I like sourcing my own leads, building up a relationship with my customers and ultimately ensuring they are happy with the product and service we are delivering. To build that relationship and portfolio it’s all about putting the customer first and striving to meet and exceed their expectations. This is an ethos which I see at GP and one of the key attractions of coming to work here.
Elaine recalls: ‘I first met Jimmy (Gilchrist) when he helped me navigate my car through the snow during the bad weather we had this winter. He had his GP jacket on and I was so grateful to him for helping me and it left me with a really positive experience of GP Plantscape.’
The new recruit admits she has a lot to learn and has been studying her plant and container daily, but when it comes to managing customer accounts she has hit the ground running – getting out and about to introduce herself and understand GP customer’s requirements.
Elaine said: ‘This is by far the nicest product I have had to deal with. Plants really do make people happy and I just want to get out and bring a wee bit of Holland to all my customers.”
