The brand new children’s hospital opened in Glasgow in 2015 and contains a large atrium giving high light levels, white wall coverings and floor tiles accented by contemporary furniture in bright, vibrant colours. The hospital issued a brief to provide colourful displays which would complement the interior whilst providing a festive feel in an otherwise spacious, minimalist environment.
It was essential to bring a festive mood to an environment to help patients so young and their families celebrate the special time of year. Furthermore, the quality and effectiveness of the displays were important to the client as they would provide an important backdrop to events and photo opportunities, critical to fundraising efforts for the charity.
After initial discussions at our nursery viewing materials, the final solution agreed was a 16 foot artificial Christmas tree which would be a central attraction in the large atria area yet not too large to be imposing. Simple baubles were chosen to decorate the tree in a variety of bright colours which would appeal to the young patients and create an eye-catching display in the centre of the atrium. Coordinating garlands again simple but effective were installed on the 9 pillars within the atrium area to add to the ambience.
The final solution whilst simplistic was very effective against the stark background of the hospital , creating a festive atmosphere in what is normally a very clinical area and a real focal point for the festive celebrations.
Kirsten Sinclair, Director of Fundraising at Yorkhill Children’s Charity said:
“Christmas is such a special time of year for children, and we don’t want our young patients to miss out on the fun just because they’re in hospital. It was especially important for us to mark our first Christmas at the Royal Hospital for Children, following our move from the Yorkhill site last year.
We put on lots of special events for the children in the run-up to Christmas and decorated the whole hospital with Christmas trees and fun decorations.
It was a pleasure to work with GP Plantscape Ltd who created a fabulous display of Christmas decorations in the main atrium. The decorations looked tasteful and the bright colours certainly appealed to our young patients.
The 16ft tree became a real focal point for all our Christmas activity, with presentations and performances all taking place in front of it.
The team were very accommodating and installed the decorations outwith normal working hours, which ensured that there was no disruption to vital services
We’re looking forward to working with the team at GP Plantscape Ltd again in 2016.”
GP Plantscape are proud to have been able to work with Yorkhill Children’s Charity by providing the festive displays for their first Christmas in the new hospital and having the opportunity to provide a truly wonderful Christmas experience to young people who have been through so much.
