Plants in the workplace do more than just brighten up a room—they can play a powerful role in supporting our well-being. Studies have shown that being surrounded by greenery can help reduce stress, promote a sense of calm, and even improve overall mood.

Incorporating indoor plants into your workspace brings physical and mental benefits, such as enhanced concentration, increased productivity, and reduced symptoms like headaches and high blood pressure.
Just one plant has a positive impact on our stress levels.
To celebrate Stress Awareness Month, we’ve curated a list of five of our favourite indoor plants that can help create a calmer, more relaxing work environment.
Aloe Vera
With its thick, spiky green leaves, the Aloe vera plant is a great way to add a bit of style to your office. It’s not just about looks though—it comes with some pretty handy benefits too. This cactus-like plant is known for helping to clean the air by absorbing toxins and releasing oxygen, making the space feel a bit fresher.
It’s also famous for its soothing properties. Inside the leaves is a gel-like substance that works wonders on burns, especially sunburn, giving a nice cooling relief. That said, probably best not to start cutting into your office plant—Aloe vera gel is easy to find in shops and a lot less messy.
Sansevieria (Snake Plant)
Another pointed leaf variety with excellent air purifying qualities, the Sansevieria, also commonly known as mother-in-laws tongue. Go figure. One significant benefit of incorporating this plant into your office space is that it’s easy to maintain and almost indestructible. With its green and silver leaves, edged with a yellow stripe, it’s an eye-catching addition to the workplace that will stand up to the odd shake and prod in a bustling environment.

Areca Palm
For a softer look, the Areca palm with long green fonds is a much more delicate plant to bring nature inside. Christened the butterfly palm because of its gently floating leaves, it gives the impression of being in a tropical oasis. Graceful and elegant and with excellent air purifying abilities, working in the shade of the Areca palm will bring a sense of calm and focus to help you concentrate.
Hedera Helix (common ivy)
There is good reason why the common old ivy is no stranger to our homes. Historically, one reason it was brought into the house (particularly at Christmas) to keep us positive in the winter months as it was believed to ward off negativity. The Hedera Helix has seen a recent revival due to trends in office design – utilising shelving units with small, trailing plants particularly favoured, to create a visual stimulus. So, it’s time to embrace the past and show love to the ivy and introduce peace and positivity to your staff.

Peace Lily
The dramatic white flowers of the Spathiphyllum wallisii are thought to resemble the white flag of surrender and hence the common name – Peace Lily. With large green, glossy leaves, this elegant plant sends a feeling of calm throughout the environment and is another of the most effective plants at absorbing air pollutants. The long-lasting blooms bring character and tranquility, leaving us feeling both psychologically and physically calm.
