GP Plantscape were challenged with providing a feature tree for the main atrium of Exchange Place 1 in Edinburgh and installing it into a custom made planter.
The bespoke reclaimed oak planter which was commissioned by Scottish Widows Investment Partnership (SWIP) and designed by Lisa Morgan of Morgan McDonnell Architecture Ltd was to be installed in the main atrium and the tree required had to have a natural look similar to an outdoor tree style.
A 3.5m Ficus Fibrosa was choosen which, as well as giving the desired form, was partly chosen for its ability to cope with slightly lower light levels than many other ficus types. This type proves beneficial as the ambient light levels can fall away dramatically in the core of this tall atrium space on cloudy days.
The finished planter designed by Morgan McDonnell Architecture Ltd shown incorporates a high section to provide a touch down work area and a lower portion which provides relaxed seating under the tree canopy for the atrium. GP Plantscape also provide interior planters at Exchange Place 1 which are maintained on behalf of Jones Lang La Salle.
